International Junior School

Welcome to Dulwich Beijing Junior School!

Our aim is to ensure that all primary school students in our care are happy, confident and enthusiastic learners. We provide an appropriate and balanced academic challenge that enables students to realise their unique potential in a supportive environment.

We offer a stimulating creative curriculum giving elementary school students greater autonomy over time, allowing them to take greater responsibility for their learning. Regular assessment tracks student progress to ensure all children achieve to the best of their abilities.

Joyful Learning in DCB Junior School

At Dulwich College Beijing, students are at the heart of everything we do. In Junior School we go beyond academics – nurturing their interests, building their confidence and helping them discover who they are and what they love.

Here are five ways our Junior School brings the Dulwich Difference to life for your child:

Academics: A Connected, Cross-Curricular Approach to Learning

In our Junior School, students follow an enhanced English National Curriculum, providing a strong, internationally recognised foundation. What makes our approach distinctive is how we bring learning to life through connected Units of Inquiry – where subjects such as Science, Geography, History, Global Citizenship and ICT are explored together. This helps them move beyond memorising facts to understanding how knowledge connects – making learning more meaningful, engaging and relevant.

Our approach also supports learners at different language levels. Through a structured, language-rich programme – including our Talk for Writing approach – students build confidence in speaking and writing, whether English is their first or additional language. Alongside dedicated English and Maths lessons that develop conceptual understanding, reasoning and problem-solving, specialist subjects including Mandarin, PE, Art & Design Technology and Music ensure a broad, balanced education – helping children grow into confident, curious learners ready for Senior School and beyond.

Language Learning in a Multicultural Community

In a community as diverse as Dulwich College Beijing, and in line with our commitment to cross-cultural understanding and to Live Worldwise, language learning plays an important role – for both practical and cultural reasons.

English

English is our language of inclusion here at DCB, and new students joining us and in need of English support will receive it thanks to our well-experienced EAL (English as an Additional Language) specialists, well-qualified not just to help our students [L(1] [J(2] gain confidence in academic and social communication, but also to pursue their interests alongside their peers.

Mandarin

Our students learn Mandarin through classes tailored to their level – from first exposure to Chinese characters to advanced literacy for native speakers. Beyond language, learning is brought to life through cultural experiences – including weekly co-curricular activities (CCAs), creative projects and annual Chinese New Year celebrations – where students use Mandarin in meaningful, real-world contexts.

A range of competitions and showcases – from writing and recitation to picture books and calligraphy – give students opportunities to express themselves and build confidence. Through lessons, daily interactions and cultural immersion, students develop the ability to communicate across languages and cultures with confidence.

Creativity and Confidence Through the Arts

Performing Arts

Music and drama are an exciting and highly visible part of Junior School life – both within and beyond the classroom. Students learn instruments as part of the curriculum – from recorder and ukulele in the lower years to band and orchestral instruments in the upper years – alongside drama in Year 6. Beyond lessons, our corridors are filled with music, as students practise, perform and work closely with specialist teachers who nurture not only skill, but confidence – ensuring every child finds their voice.

There are abundant opportunities for every student to take part and shine – from the Christmas Concert, Sounds of Spring Concert and Founder’s Day celebrations to the Dulwich Symposium, bi-annual Key Stage 2 Recitals and Young Musician of the Year. Through our Education in Motion network, students collaborate with visiting professional artists and take part in festivals such as MADD – gaining experiences that go beyond a single school. Together, these opportunities build creativity, confidence and collaboration – helping students grow in self-belief and express themselves with confidence, both in school and beyond.

Visual Arts

At the heart of our Junior School Art and Design programme is a simple belief – every child is an artist. Through hands-on projects using materials such as ceramics, textiles and printmaking, students explore ideas creatively while building skills and confidence. Art is closely linked to Units of Inquiry – helping children see big ideas in new ways and make meaningful connections across their learning.

In our studio, students are encouraged to make choices and develop their own creative voice, with their work regularly showcased in our evolving Bridge Gallery. As part of the EiM network, they also take part in events such as MADD (Music, Arts, Dance, and Drama) and competitions like FOBISIA – extending their experiences beyond the classroom. Throughout, we value the creative process as much as the final outcome – nurturing curiosity, problem-solving and a lasting love for making.

Living Worldwise Through Sustainability and Global Citizenship

What does it mean exactly to Live Worldwise?

In our Junior School, it means helping every child grow into a thoughtful, responsible and globally aware individual – not just academically successful, but ready to make a positive difference. Sustainability and Global Citizenship are woven through everyday learning and school life – guided by our Dulwich Values of resilience, confidence, respect, integrity, responsibility, open-mindedness and kindness.

Students don’t just learn about these ideas – they put them into action. Through initiatives such as our Global Citizenship Leaders programme, they plan and lead activities that make a real impact in the school community, learning that even small actions can make a difference. Our five key competencies – from Cultural Literacy to Sustainability – are embedded across the curriculum, empowering students to think critically, act with purpose and see themselves as capable of shaping the world around them.

In Junior School, our Classrooms Are Just the Beginning.

When curiosity is sparked, learning comes alive. At Dulwich College Beijing, Learning Beyond the Classroom is central to how we help students apply their knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Through hands-on experiences – including CCAs, educational trips, residentials and events such as the Dulwich Symposium – students explore their interests, develop new skills and build confidence. Whether in sport, creative clubs or coding projects, they learn by doing, collaborating and discovering new passions with support from teachers, specialists and Senior School mentors.

Students are also encouraged to challenge themselves through competitions and global opportunities – from Kangaroo Maths and the Hong Kong Young Writers Competition to computing events such as BEBRAS, Game Jam and City Hack, as well as Model United Nations.

Alongside this, our House system provides a strong sense of belonging – supporting students as they settle into a new environment, build friendships and develop leadership through a wide range of House events. Together with initiatives such as Mindful Morning and our active parent community, we create a supportive environment where every child feels connected, confident and ready to thrive.
