Safeguarding information for third-party staff

At Dulwich College International Schools, Safeguarding is the means by which we provide a safe and effective environment so that all our children can fully develop and learn. We also take every step to ensure that children in our care are protected from any form of abuse or neglect.

At all times, members of staff are required to work in a professional manner with children. All staff should be aware of the dangers inherent in:

  • Working alone with a child
  • Physical interventions
  • Cultural and gender stereotyping
  • Managing sensitive information
  • Exchanging gifts with children or parents
  • Disclosing personal details inappropriately
  • Using the students’ washrooms - this must be avoided
  • Meeting students outside school hours or school duties
  • Engaging in inappropriate conversations through social networks, email or verbal Conversation

Dealing With Concerns

If a student chooses to confide in you, please:

  • Listen with care.
  • Stay calm and be reassuring.
  • Find a quiet place to talk.
  • Do not express any disbelief in what the child is telling you.
  • Don’t promise to keep secrets.
  • Listen, but do not press for information.
  • Say that you are glad that the child told you.
  • Explain that you need to record what the child has said.
  • Keep notes and produce a signed and dated Record of Concern the same day.
  • Say that you will do your best to protect and support the child.
  • Seek medical help if necessary.
  • Contact any adult, such as a school nurse, that the child may have told. Their advice may make it easier to help the child.
  • Contact by phone the focal point staff member as quickly as possible.
