The roar of the Tiger at Dulwich College Beijing

Joseph Stewart
Assistant Head of School - KS3; Senior School Teacher of Art

Symbolising power and courage in Chinese culture, the Tiger has always been my favourite animal.  I found it particularly interesting how tigers are seen to be the guardians of children which explains the traditional tiger hats or slippers you often see in Beijing.

In some ways, my native Chinese colleagues at Dulwich College Beijing can be seen as the guardians of the school.  Many have been here for over 10 years and could not be more welcoming and generous in spirit to the newcomer I was a few years back, and to all our international colleagues. Their daily support in translation and cultural transmission is highly appreciated and should not be taken for granted.

This video is especially dedicated to all my DCB Chinese colleagues from all departments across the College. Thank you for being your usual welcoming selves to make the community feel at home, even away from home.

We wish everyone a Roarsome Year of the Tiger!

Make-up designs in the video by Kalyana Marechal, Eimear Gervin, Jacob Dong and Wayne Yang are a blend of tiger features and Peking Opera styles.
