Service to Others in Yunnan
Last week, a group of forty Year 8 and 9 students embarked on a service trip to Yunnan province. Led by four Year 12 members of Interact, the main purpose of this trip was for the students to experience the impact of the service work they had been doing in the past year and to reflect on the ethics of their actions.
During the first two days of the trip, students visited a foster home and delivered carefully planned lessons to both a migrant school in Kunming and a small primary school in rural Wuding. Seeing the migrant students and the significantly different learning environments was a new experience for many. DCB students were both touched by the hardships the migrant children endured and amazed by the resilience and optimism they showed. As evident through the charming smiles and laughter from the migrant children, the direct interactions between them and our students proved to be truly meaningful.
The third day of the trip involved a visit to a kindergarten high up in the mountains of rural Wuding. There, the students distributed special sweets and snacks they had brought from Beijing to the young toddlers and had lots of fun playing games and spending quality time with the resident nursery children. As most of the toddlers did not maintain frequent contact with their parents, our company was especially cherished. In addition, our students finally had the opportunity to see first-hand the product of our fruitful fundraising events — a newly constructed bathroom with running water (which the kindergarten did not have before).
This trip has been an eye-opening experience to every single participant. It would not have been possible without the invaluable help from Cassy (the founder of the charity “Love for the Poor”), Zhang Ayi and Father Long (the foster parents) and the accompanying teachers. The Interact club is also extremely thankful for the support from the DCB community. We hope that all the students who set off on this journey have returned with something valuable from this experience, and we look forward to the next service trip.
