From 19-21 August, our Year 12 students embarked on their International Baccalaureate (IB) journey with Ignition, a three-day academic retreat at the Hyatt Hotel in Wangjing.

Ignition 2024

This retreat was more than just an introduction; it was an important step in preparing our new Key Stage 5 students for the rigorous and rewarding path ahead. The experience began with a photography scavenger hunt at the 798 Art District, followed by a series of sessions the next day that offered students opportunities to connect and provided an in-depth introduction to the IB programme. The IB sessions covered what to expect over the next two years, the leadership skills essential for success, and the critical elements of the IB Core. The focus was on equipping students with the knowledge and tools they need to excel academically and personally during this pivotal stage of their education.

In collaboration with Dr. Grace Cheng-Dodge, our University College Counselling (UCC) team hosted workshops that guided students through the university application process. Dr. Cheng-Dodge, an experienced school administrator and college admissions expert, emphasised the importance of self-reflection and academic focus. She helped students understand that the next two years are a personal journey, where their main competition is themselves, encouraging students to align their university applications with their genuine interests and life experiences.

Dr. Cheng-Dodge shared her expertise on the admissions process

Dr. Cheng-Dodge shared her expertise on the admissions process, particularly for American universities, where there is no single formula for acceptance. She emphasised that what truly matters is for students to have authentic passions, meaningful experiences, and pride in who they are and what they love. She noted, “If you love what you’re doing, universities hope that you will continue it through your academic journey. When your classmates from around the world are interested in your work, you naturally become a leader.”

Year 12 Lead Kelsey Pichery

Year 12 Lead Kelsey Pichery shared, “Ignite the IB: Core Retreat was an amazing experience for our students new to the IB and Key Stage 5. They showcased many skills and traits needed for success in the IB in just a few days. I have high hopes for their next two years.”

The retreat was a powerful reminder of the importance of academic preparation at our school, setting the stage for success in both the IB program and beyond.
