Inaugural Dulwich Technology Expo 2018

Dulwich College Beijing held the inaugural Dulwich Technology Expo on January 25 - 26, 2018. Teams of 9 to 11 year old students, from seven Dulwich Colleges, collaborated in fun competitions linking to entrepreneurship and real world STEAM challenges. It was the perfect occasion for the official opening of our state-of-the-art SE21 centre by Dulwich College International Chairman, Mr. Fraser White.

September 2017 saw the launch of a pioneering initiative in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) at Dulwich College International (DCI) schools. Collaboration is at the heart of the SE21 hubs, and it takes place at all levels and ages - within schools, within the Dulwich network, and externally, through link-ups to other schools, universities and Silicon Valley experts. We were proud to officially open our SE21, a name with multiple meanings. Dulwich College sits in Southeast London, in the SE21 postcode, while here at Dulwich, the "S" in SE21 stands for STEAM, the "E" for entrepreneurship, and "21" for the 21st century skills of creativity, critical thinking and collaboration.

Last week, students from seven Colleges had a first hand experience collaborating with peers from across the Dulwich family of schools not only solving a series of problems but also exploring virtual reality, testing F1 in Schools race track and MEV VR racing. The keynote speaker for the Dulwich Tech Expo was Mr. Dominic Johnson-Hill, the CEO and founder of 'Plastered 8’, who inspired students with amusing anecdotes of challenges and highlights from his career in Beijing.

'We all have crazy, innovative ideas in our heads, but we may never really tried to develop them because of the lack of information, knowledge or technology; but now, with the newly built SE21, we can make those ideas into reality, said Alina Y, Year 12 student, during the opening ceremony.

During the two days of conference, participants split into 16 mixed teams worked on one thing - creating and advertising their own brand of sustainable bug-based food products. The teams had to then showcase their ideas, with top teams awarded for their creativity, communication and collaboration skills.
